Tom Ahrenholz has struggled with his weight for the last three years, and now, he is determined to take the necessary steps to shed the fat. As a 25-year-old bus driver, losing weight is crucial for him to keep his bus driver’s license, as his company’s medical examiner has warned that he needs to lose 30 kilos over the next five years to be in good health.
Tom currently weighs 128 kilos, which is concerning, but his belly fat is the bigger issue. The medical examiner points out that Tom carries almost nine liters of fat in his belly, which is alarming since it is already affecting his health. He has high blood pressure at the age of 25, which usually requires medication, but they will try to manage it with diet first.
Tom has been working as a bus driver for seven years, and his job involves changing shifts between mornings, evenings, and nights. He confronts different situations with stress on the road and with passengers, making it challenging for him to stick to a healthy eating habit. His partner Stefan, who is also a bus driver, also sees the difficulty in maintaining a regular eating pattern due to shift work.
To help Tom with his eating behavior, Matthias Riedl, a behavior therapist, joins in to guide him in making changes. Tom knows he should eat healthy, but he often fails to follow through with his own plans. Matthias Riedl realizes that Tom’s diet includes three of the top unhealthiest foods in the Western world, processed foods, sugary drinks, and deli meats.
To address this, Matthias Riedl has thought of some quick and easy alternatives that Tom can bring to work, such as a veggie bowl, a carrot noodle bowl with almond pesto, and a berry protein shake. These options are healthy and contain less salt, sugar, and additives than his previous choices. Tom should have a structured meal plan to avoid skipping meals, which can cause excessive hunger and poor decision-making when it comes to choosing food.
Tom needs to do regular physical activity to lower his blood pressure, manage his weight, and improve his mood. It would be helpful to have Stefan on board with him and exercise together. Tom has been trying to modify his eating behavior for three months, and he meets every four weeks with his behavioral therapist, Moritz Schäfer, to review his progress.
Tom admits that he has moments when he is lazy and craves some unhealthy food, like Nutella sandwiches. However, he is determined to stay on track and follow his nutritionist’s recommendations. He has learned that with discipline, self-motivation, and support, he can change his eating pattern and shed the excess weight.
