First up is the Kalte Ente, or Cold Duck. This sweet drink is made with white wine, lemon and sugar, and then mixed with sparkling wine and a dash of orange juice. The name comes from “kaltes Ende”, which means “cold end”. While it may not be to everyone’s taste, it certainly has a cult following among DDR enthusiasts.

Next up is the Buttermilch Linsen Klick Torte. Despite the name’s unfamiliarity, the recipe is relatively simple. The base of the torte is made with buttermilk and lentils, and then topped with a fruity pudding and whipped cream. The name “Klick Torte” comes from the sound the pudding makes when it sets on top of the torte. While it may seem like a strange combination, the torte is surprisingly delicious, and the lentils add a unique earthy flavor to the base.

These DDR desserts may have been created in a time of scarcity, but they still have a place on modern menus. With a little creativity, these classic recipes can be updated for contemporary tastes, while still honoring their historic roots. And while they may not be the healthiest options out there, sometimes a little indulgence is just what we need.
