Adipositas: Mit Clean Eating gesund abnehmen | Die Ernährungs-Docs | NDR
As the first to arrive, a young man accompanied by his mother boards the ship. His body has suffered during the COVID-19 pandemic and homeschooling. He believes that the main reason for his weight gain was due to being completely isolated and having no social contacts. He stopped going out and felt alone in his own little world. The lack of physical activity due to homeschooling combined with contact restrictions, less movement, and increased media consumption created a vicious circle that negatively impacted his health. He expressed his concerns to the Ernährungs Docs (Nutrition Docs) and pleaded for help to achieve his goals.
Henrik, a 17-year-old young man weighing 110 kilos, gained almost 20 kilos during the COVID-19 pandemic. His mother, concerned about hypertension, wrote to the Ernährungs Docs to help her son. She came along to discuss her son’s health with the nutrition experts. Henrik’s family has a history of obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, which caused his mother’s alarm bells to ring.
Dr. Schäfer, the nutritionist, explains that the COVID-19 pandemic caused an obesity pandemic among children and adolescents. Contact restrictions, homeschooling, lack of physical activity, and increased media consumption intensified the problem. Henrik admits that during homeschooling, he spent most of his time sitting at his desk, often snacking on toast with cheese, milkshakes, yoghurt with honey, and other high sugar content foods. He observed his weight increase rapidly, causing concerns for his future health.
Dr. Schäfer measured Henrik’s height and waist circumference, which should be no more than 88 cm for a 17-year-old boy. Henrik’s waist circumference was 115 cm, indicating he had a higher risk of heart disease due to his increased weight. The doctor explained to Henrik and his mother that he risks incurring an added risk of 40% if they do not do anything about his weight.
Henrik’s weight loss diet includes organic food, low-sugar fruits and vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, fish, and omega-3 fatty acids. Dr. Schäfer recommended that Henrik eats vegetables like kale, carrots, paprika, and celery in the mornings to get essential vitamins and fiber. Henrik converted to healthy snacks and started eating nuts and berries instead of junk food.
To avoid boredom, Dr. Schäfer suggested “smart cooking” as a new way of cooking. This technique uses natural foods intended for eating consciously. He recommends that food should be steamed or gently cooked rather than deep-fried or fried in oils with high-fat contents. Henrik’s mother will now devote more energy to educating herself on smart cooking techniques to ensure that the family stays on track with the plan.
Henrik started taking responsibility for his food choices by cooking his meals and food shopping, and his mother began helping less often. Instead of snacking throughout the day, he set fixed meal times with healthy food alternatives. Henrik even took healthy food as a snack during his break-time at school.
Two weeks later, Henrik and his friends completed a 6 km obstacle course. Henrik prepared by going to the gym twice a week, playing badminton and hiking, and eating healthily. With motivation from his friends, he overcame the obstacles and completed the challenge.
Henrik achieved his first intermediate goal of losing 10% of his weight and removing 27 cm of his waistline by switching to healthy food and regular physical activity. He allocated more time to cooking and meal preparation and, with the help from Doctor Schäfer, increased his knowledge of healthy food options. With motivation from his friends, he overcame obstacles and achieved success. Henrik is now on a path to a healthier life.
