Today, we are going to make delicious recipes with Swiss chard, which I personally think is fantastic. Every year, I grow Swiss chard in my garden, and there are different varieties available. The classic green Swiss chard with a white stem is always beautiful, but there is even a prettier variety called “Five Gallon” with its colorful stem. If you wish to purchase seeds for your garden, look for this particular variety.
When I first started growing vegetables, I tried Swiss chard, and from the very first season, I fell in love with it. I remember thinking that it looked stunning, but was unsure of how many plants I should grow for two people. Ten plants should be enough for two people if you want to have the perfect amount. But, if the plant thrives in your garden, it is possible to give away Swiss chard since it is so prolific. The good thing about Swiss chard is that as you harvest the mature outer leaves, the young ones keep growing from the center. So, don’t remove the entire plant when harvesting.
Today, we will prepare two uncomplicated dishes which feature Swiss chard. One is “Swiss Chard Rolls,” and the other is “Swiss Chard Wraps,” which is perfect if you want to use only the greens as it might be tricky to figure out what to do with the stem since it has high oxalic acid content. This acid can make your mouth and teeth feel fuzzy.
Let’s start with preparing the filling for the Swiss Chard Rolls. Sauté chopped onions in olive oil, add flour and breadcrumbs, add some broth, and some soy sauce. Put this mixture aside to cool down. Next, prepare the Swiss chard leaves. The best leaves for rolling are the bigger ones (not those tiny ones). Cut the stems out by creating a “v” shape. This is because the stem will prevent the leaves from rolling correctly.
The filling is now ready to be spooned onto the Swiss chard leaves. Roll the leaves tightly around the filling, and either tie with string or hold in place with a toothpick. Put the rolls in the oven to cook for 15 minutes. You can spoon the leftover broth over the rolls in the oven to make them a little more tender.
While the rolls are cooking, prepare the Swiss Chard Wraps by mixing chopped shallots, fennel seeds, peppercorns, and lime leaves with the chopped Swiss chard greens. Mix everything together and place them in a jar. Heat up some broth and pour it over the greens, making sure they are entirely covered. Once the broth cools down, refrigerate it to use it later.
It’s that simple! Swiss chard is such an easy vegetable to grow, and you can do so almost all year-round. Depending on where you live, the Swiss chard might need a little more warmth. Swiss chard is related to beets, which is an interesting fact. Also, snails are not very fond of Swiss chard, making it the perfect crop without worrying about pest control, even on a balcony garden.
