Gematik Digital, the German Federal Government’s health card project company, has introduced the digital prescription (E-Rezept) program in Germany’s health care system. This innovative digital prescription system aims to revolutionize the traditional prescription process by allowing patients to receive and manage their prescriptions electronically. With the E-Rezept, medication can be ordered more efficiently, reducing wait times, and increasing convenience for patients.
gematik digital: Das E-Rezept
As the world moves towards a more digital age, it’s no surprise that even the traditional paper prescriptions are becoming a thing of the past. In Germany, the introduction of electronic prescriptions will revolutionize the way physicians, pharmacists, and patients interact with medication. The Gematik Digital event was held to discuss the upcoming developments and address the importance of the new electronic prescription system.
The event started with an introduction from the organizers, who expressed their excitement at the high level of interest in the event, with over 3,400 participants from various sectors. During the event, the focus was on the electronic prescription for prescription medication, which will be tested from July 1, 2021, in Berlin-Brandenburg.
The event aimed to provide participants with a better understanding of the concept and impact of the electronic prescription on the daily work of medical practitioners and the patients they serve. Alongside Gematik employees, external speakers were invited to present their thoughts on various aspects of the new system.
The speakers started by defining the electronic prescription and explaining the different perspectives of physicians, patients, and pharmacists. They also discussed the benefits of digitalizing the prescription process, emphasizing the prospects of improving efficiency and reducing environmental waste. The system involves the electronic issuing, transmission, and dispensing of prescriptions, thereby reducing errors and improving the availability of essential medication.
The process starts with the physician who uses an HTHC (Heilberufsausweis) to initiate a Komfort signature session, which allows for the HDA (Healthcare Document and Information Technology service) and the connector to create e-prescriptions that are then electronically signed. The next step is the procurement of the medication by the patient, either in a paper format or through a smartphone application.
The system brings significant advantages to patients, physicians, and pharmacists. Patients can now receive their prescriptions digitally, a process that is more convenient and eco-friendly, while physicians reduce the burden of paperwork and save time. Pharmacists benefit from the centralized system, which enables efficient dispensing and accurate recording of medication supplies.
In summary, the Gematik Digital event provided an informative and insightful platform for the community to discuss the upcoming developments in electronic prescriptions. With the expected benefits that come with a completely digital system, such as efficiency, accuracy, and convenience, it’s no surprise that many are excited about the future of the electronic prescription.
