Making your own bread and baked goods has become increasingly popular in recent years. Not only is it a fun and rewarding hobby, but it also allows you to control exactly what goes into your food. This is precisely why I decided to start making my own bread and even my own rolls, which I will share with you today.

I have made rolls before, and they have turned out quite well, but I wanted to take it a step further by making them from scratch. It’s so easy to just buy rolls from the bakery or the store, but I wanted to see if I could make them just as good – or even better – myself.

So, I started with 500g of flour (type 550) and added 20g of yeast, 6g of sugar, and 10g of salt. To this mixture, I added 10g of good butter, and then gradually added in 330ml of water, roughly three quarters to start with and then the rest as needed, to create a homogeneous dough.

I then let the dough rest and rise for about 30 minutes in a warm place in my kitchen. After this, I divided the dough into equal parts, depending on how large or small I wanted my rolls to be. You can expect to make between 9 and 15 rolls from this amount of dough, depending on how much dough you use per roll.

To create the perfect roll shape, I took one piece of dough and folded the ends together in the center, as shown in the video. Then, with my palm facing down, I rolled the dough ball in a circular motion on the kitchen counter to create tension, which ultimately helps the rolls to rise well.

Once I had shaped all of my dough balls, I placed them on a buttered baking sheet and let them rise for another 30 minutes. In the meantime, I preheated my oven to 240°C and filled a heatproof dish with water, which I placed on the bottom of the oven. This helps the rolls to develop a beautiful crust and ensures that they don’t dry out.

After 30 minutes, I put the rolls into the oven and let them bake for roughly 20 minutes, or until they had developed a nice golden brown color. If you prefer your rolls to be soft, you can brush them with a little bit of melted butter after taking them out of the oven. If you prefer a more crisp crust, you can brush them with water before baking.

Overall, making my own rolls was a very rewarding experience, and I can’t wait to try more recipes and techniques in the future. With just a few simple ingredients and some patience, you too can create delicious rolls that will impress all of your friends and family.
