Saftiger Nuss Kranz - The Perfect Easter Treat!
Easter is just around the corner and what better way to celebrate than by baking your very own Saftiger Nuss Kranz. This traditional German recipe has been handed down from grandma to grandchild for generations and is a must-try for everyone who loves sweet treats. This delicious pastry is made using a simple yeast dough and filled with a nutty concoction that will leave your taste buds tingling with delight.
To start off, we need to prepare the yeast dough. In a measuring cup, mix together 230g of warm milk, 80g of sugar, and a cube of yeast. Let this mixture sit for a few minutes until it starts to bubble. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, butter, egg yolk, and salt. Then, add the milk mixture to the flour mixture and knead it all together for about 10 minutes until you have a smooth dough. Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let it rest in a warm place for 15 minutes.
Next, it’s time to prepare the nut filling. In a pan, mix together 75ml of warm milk, 50g of sugar, a packet of vanilla sugar, a teaspoon of cinnamon, and 200g of ground hazelnuts. Heat the mixture over low heat until it thickens and forms a paste-like consistency. You can also add a dash of alcohol like Amaretto or rum, but this is optional. Let the mixture cool for a few minutes.
Now, it’s time to assemble the Saftiger Nuss Kranz. Roll out the dough into a rectangular shape, and spread the nut filling evenly over it. Roll up the dough into a long cylinder and slice it down the middle lengthwise. Twist the two halves together and form them into a circular shape. Let it rest for another 15 minutes.
While the Saftiger Nuss Kranz is resting, take a third of the remaining dough and form it into a bunny shape. Cut out the ears, nose, and paws from another portion of the dough and attach them to the bunny shape. Brush the bunny with an egg wash and let it rest for a few minutes.
Preheat the oven to 170°C and bake the Saftiger Nuss Kranz for 40 minutes until it is golden brown. Once done, let it cool and brush it with a sugar glaze made from powdered sugar and lemon juice. The bunny can be baked alongside the Nuss Kranz, and once it is done, it can be used as a cute decoration.
The Saftiger Nuss Kranz is a perfect Easter treat that can be enjoyed with family and friends. It is a simple, yet delicious pastry that will add a touch of tradition to your holiday celebrations. So, go ahead and try this recipe for yourself, and we guarantee, you won’t be disappointed!
