Jugendtag: The Art of Salad Dressing
Salads are a versatile and healthy meal option. But let’s face it, they can sometimes be pretty boring. A bowl of lettuce with a drizzle of store-bought salad dressing can get old fast. So how do you make salads more exciting? The answer is simple: homemade salad dressing.
Nowadays, there are countless ways to make salad dressing, from vinaigrettes to creamy dressings. However, back in the day, Jugendtag only shared three simple salad dressing recipes in one video over twelve years ago. So, let’s go with a classic and make a basic field salad dressing.
To make the salad, 300 grams of field salad will do. You can individually pluck the leaves off the bunch after washing them. Some people prefer doing this, but we like to keep the bunch together as is. Next, add in 50 grams of diced bacon fat for flavor and 50 grams of smoked bacon bits for texture. We also add two shallots, halved and sliced, approximately 60 grams. For some extra taste and color, we diced two small tomatoes.
For the dressing, we used apple cider vinegar, but balsamic vinegar can also work. Simply add a pinch of salt and pepper, and you’re good to go. You can adjust the amount of dressing according to your taste.
Start by cutting the diced bacon fat and placing it in a pan over low heat. Make sure to stir occasionally, so it doesn’t stick. Once the bacon fat starts rendering a little bit of oil, add the bacon bits. Let it cook for 10-15 minutes or until cooked to your preference.
While you’re at it, dice the tomatoes and set them aside. Once the bacon is cooked, remove it from the pan, but leave the fat in. Add the shallots into the bacon fat and let it cook for 3-5 minutes until tender.
To create the dressing, mix the apple cider vinegar with a pinch of salt and pepper. You can also add a little bit of water to the mix, but we prefer the simple mix.
Now it’s time to assemble the salad. Start by laying the field salad on the plate, followed by the tomatoes. Finish it off by drizzling the salad dressing over the top of the salad mix. Finally, add the bacon and shallots to the top of the salad for some extra crunch and flavor.
Taking the time to make homemade salad dressing adds a lot of flavor and texture to a simple salad. It’s a great way to add some variety to your meal rotation and experiment with different flavor combinations. So, next time you’re in a salad rut, give this classic field salad dressing recipe a try. You won’t be disappointed.
