When he received his diagnosis, this man was scared out of his mind. I would say that death was creeping up on him, because he couldn’t see it from the outside, but inside, he was slowly wasting away. My name is Andreas Witt, I’m 42 years old, and I have a fatty liver. The cells of my liver have been storing more and more fat, unnoticed, for a long time. This puts me at risk of a liver infection, cirrhosis, liver cancer, diabetes, and kidney failure. Suddenly, Andreas Witt finds himself and his health on the brink of disaster.

The 42-year old is a train conductor and operates ICE trains from Hamburg to Berlin, Cologne, and Munich on a rotating schedule. It’s a responsible job that requires him to be healthy. Every three years, he gets checked by the company doctor. On two consecutive occasions, the doctor noticed something wrong with his liver function tests. They accused him of alcohol abuse, but, according to the specialist doctors at the University Clinic in Hamburg, it’s not due to excessive drinking. They’re concerned about the risk of cirrhosis, and they can’t currently prescribe any medication to help. They suggest gradually reducing weight by using a balanced diet and regular physical exercise - in other words, losing weight. But, how can he do that when all previous attempts have failed?

Nutritionist Anne Fleck examines Witt’s blood test results, as well as the findings from his ultrasound and fibroscan test (elasticity tests for his liver tissue). She notes that a normal, healthy liver is smooth, while Witt’s liver is two-thirds fatty (60-70% of cells are fatty). Additionally, his GPT level in the blood is double the maximum allowed, indicating liver inflammation. If left untreated, the inflammation will lead to liver scarring and cirrhosis. Fleck suggests treating Witt’s gut flora because an imbalance of bacteria in the gut worsens liver disease, and this is related to overweight conditions. The lack of good bacteria in the gut impairs gut health, making the gut wall porous. As a result, toxins from the gut may enter the bloodstream, travel through the portal vein, and reach the liver. Once there, they’ll aggravate inflammation and worsen liver damage.

Witt’s gut flora analysis revealed a surplus of bad bacteria and a deficiency of good ones. The good news is that we can strengthen Witt’s gut through proper diet and exercise, which will help heal his damaged liver. Fleck suggests fasting at night to reduce Witt’s night-time eating habit. Instead of eating, she suggests drinking a large glass of water or using the beta-spray or -drops, which contain bitter substances that divert his attention from his sweet cravings. Witt also needs to change his lifestyle significantly during the day, starting by removing bread and buns, cakes, fast food, and pre-made dishes from his diet, alternating with meals high in vegetables, high-quality plant proteins, and whole grains. For example, he can have a green smoothie for his first meal of the day and a roasted vegetable salad with beans and feta cream for his second meal in the afternoon.

After five months of consistent effort, Witt’s liver is free of fat, and the inflammation has vanished, as shown in his blood test results and an ultrasound scan. He happily reports that he has lost 23 kilos with a weight of 96.5 kilos today. Witt proves that changing one’s lifestyle can reverse the negative effects of a fatty liver.
